Sudurpaschim Province: The Complete First-Time Travel Guide

A regional overview of Sudurpaschim (Far-West Nepal) — Kanchanpur, Kailali, Doti, Baitadi, Darchula and Dadeldhura — for travellers who want to go beyond Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Ask most travellers what to see in Nepal and you'll hear Kathmandu, Pokhara, Everest, Annapurna. Almost nobody outside Nepal has heard of Sudurpaschim Province — and that's the entire reason we built Payla Travel here in Mahendranagar. This is a guide to the region we actually live in.

Where Is Sudurpaschim?

Sudurpaschim ("Far-West") is Nepal's westernmost province, bordering both Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh in India along its southern and western edge, and Tibet (China) to the north through Darchula. It spans everything from the flat Terai plains around Mahendranagar and Dhangadhi to the high Himalaya around Api and Saipal.

Why Visit

Three reasons keep bringing our guests back: wildlife that hasn't been "discovered" yet (Shuklaphanta), Himalayan treks with almost no other trekkers on the trail (Api Himal, Khaptad, Badimalika, Rara), and a genuinely easy overland gateway into North India's Chardham and Uttarakhand pilgrimage circuit via the Gadda Chauki border.

The Districts, Briefly

  • Kanchanpur — home to Mahendranagar and Shuklaphanta National Park; the region's main gateway.
  • Kailali — Dhangadhi and its airport; the main air link to Kathmandu.
  • Dadeldhura — Ugratara Temple and Amargadhi Fort; a hill-district stop en route north.
  • Doti — Saileshwori Temple and the trailhead region for Khaptad National Park.
  • Baitadi — home to the revered Tripura Sundari Temple.
  • Darchula — the remote trailhead district for Api Himal and the Tibet border trade route.
  • Bajura & Bajhang — Badimalika Temple and part of the Khaptad plateau.

Getting In

Dhangadhi Airport (DHI) has daily flights to and from Kathmandu (about 1 hour) — by far the fastest way in if you're short on time. Overland, it's a long but scenic 12–14 hour drive from Kathmandu via the Mahakali Highway. Most of our own guests arrive by air to Dhangadhi and we handle the onward transfer to Mahendranagar (about 1.5–2 hours).

A Sample One-Week Circuit

  1. Days 1–2: Arrive Dhangadhi/Mahendranagar, settle in, Shuklaphanta jeep safari
  2. Day 3: Mahakali river rafting or a Dodhara-Chandani bridge excursion
  3. Days 4–5: Sudurpaschim Temple Tour — Tripura Sundari (Baitadi), Ugratara & Amargadhi Fort (Dadeldhura), Shaileshwori (Doti)
  4. Days 6–7: Fly out from Dhangadhi, or continue toward Khaptad/Api Himal if you have more time

Practical Notes

Sudurpaschim runs on Nepal-standard infrastructure: cash (NPR) is king outside larger towns, mobile signal is reliable in Mahendranagar and Dhangadhi but patchy in the hills and inside parks, and English is spoken in tourism businesses but Nepali and Hindi will get you further with locals. The best overall window to visit is October–April; the monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rain and can affect road access to the hill districts.

Why We're Building Here

Payla Travel exists to make this region as easy to book as Pokhara or Chitwan already are — real local knowledge, honest pricing, and packages that actually reflect how the roads and seasons here work. If you're curious about the Far-West, start with one of our specific guides — Shuklaphanta, Api Himal, or Khaptad — or just message us and tell us how many days you have.
