Khaptad National Park: Nepal’s Quiet Meadow Trek

Why Khaptad’s rolling grasslands and Khaptad Baba’s ashram make it one of the most peaceful treks in Nepal — route, spiritual significance, and a 5N/6D itinerary.

Khaptad National Park doesn't have a single dramatic peak or a famous animal to sell it — and that's exactly its appeal. It's a plateau of open grasslands (patans), pine forest and sacred sites straddling Bajhang, Bajura, Doti and Achham districts, sitting at a gentle 1,400–3,300m. Trekkers come here for space, silence, and the story of Khaptad Baba, the sage who made his hermitage here.

Who Should Trek Khaptad

This is our go-to recommendation for travellers who want a genuine Himalayan-foothill trek without extreme altitude or technical difficulty. Families with older kids, first-time trekkers, and travellers looking for a meditative rather than adrenaline-driven trip all do well here.

Our 5N/6D Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Mahendranagar/Dhangadhi → Dipayal/Jhigrana, with a stop at Ugratara Temple
  2. Day 2: Trek to Bichpani
  3. Day 3: Trek to Khaptad, with a stop at Triveni Temple; evening visit to Khaptad Baba's Ashram
  4. Day 4: Explore the national park — Sahastralinga Temple, Khaptad Daha (lake), Khaptad Patan
  5. Day 5: Return trek to Jhigrana/Dipayal
  6. Day 6: Visit Saileshwori Temple, then return to Mahendranagar/Dhangadhi

The Spiritual Layer

Khaptad Baba lived and meditated here for decades and is deeply revered across Sudurpaschim; his ashram remains an active pilgrimage site, and many Nepali visitors combine the trek with morning meditation at Triveni, where three rivers are said to meet. Even travellers with no particular spiritual interest tend to describe Khaptad as the calmest place they've trekked in Nepal.

What You'll See

Open patan grasslands that shift colour through the seasons, dense pine and oak forest, small lakes, and views toward the western Himalaya on a clear day. Wildlife includes musk deer, Himalayan black bear and a healthy population of birds, though this is not a wildlife-safari-style trek — sightings are a bonus, not the point.

Practical Notes

This package is priced for Nepali nationals and runs on a full-board basis — accommodation, all meals and pick-up/drop from Mahendranagar or Dhangadhi are included. Trekking is a mix of teahouse/lodge stays and camping depending on the night. Bring warm layers even in the shoulder seasons, as Khaptad's elevation means cool evenings year-round.
